Denver Pinched Nerve Treatment
Pinched nerves HURT! Imagine a nerve compressed by muscles or other tissue—if you don’t get immediate treatment, the PAIN from pinched nerves will only get worse. Our pinched nerve treatments vary based upon the location of the pain and the severity of the issue.
Common issues resulting from pinched nerves include:
- Carpal tunnel (median nerve pinched at the wrist injured from repetitive actions)
- Ulnar nerve injury at the elbow (often caused by leaning on elbows while sitting or driving)
- Meralgia paresthetica (caused by compression of the sensory nerve leading to the upper thigh. Often seen in pregnancy, when the enlarging uterus can cause nerve compression.)
- Common peroneal nerve injury (associated with crossing the legs at the knee)
- Sciatic nerve problems or sciatica (pain that travels from the low back into the leg frequently associated with a pinched nerve in the low back or lumbar spine)
- Cervical spine (a pinched nerve in the neck which can cause pain or tingling in the arm or shoulder blade region)
The most common symptom of a pinched nerve is a tingling sensation accompanied by some numbness. Initially, this tingling/numbness may come and go, but over time it becomes persistent. Pain may accompany the tingling sensation, often described as being “sharp” or “electrical.” Some patients experience a burning sensation in the affected area.
In severe cases, muscle weakness may occur because the nerve that controls that particular muscle has been irritated. If the pinched nerve is present, but not identified and corrected, those muscles may decrease in size and function.
If you experience these symptoms, you need immediate treatment to alleviate pain and possible long-term nerve and muscle damage.
Prevention of a Pinched Nerve
Adherence to ergonomic principles at work and home decreases nerve injury risks. Paying attention to body positions (maintaining good posture, not leaning on elbows, reducing the frequency of leg crossing) and decreasing other repetitive activities helps prevent pinched nerves. Frequent breaks or rest periods can reduce or eliminate the risk of nerve injury often associated with repetitive activities.
